Sports legends hit the links in Baiting Hollow for charity

With such a star-studded a group of athletes at Friar’s Head Golf Course in Baiting Hollow Monday, there were no shortage of famous nicknames.

Former Boston Celtics legend and 11-time NBA champion Bill Russell helped to host a charity golf tournament Monday that featured some of the greatest athletes in the history of sports. The tournament was to raise money for youth mentoring through MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, of which Russell is a founding member.

Some of the athletes who participated were Jim Brown, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Alonzo Mourning and Jerry West.

“I am honored to have so many of my friends and some of the greatest athletes of all-time join us to support our mentoring efforts,” Russell said. “I know these guys still like to compete and it will be a fun event for a great cause.”

Brown, football, and Erving, basketball, are the two biggest names in their respective sports to ever come out of Long Island. Brown played lacrosse and football at Manhasset and Erving played hoops at Roosevelt.

Even former NBA great Charles Barkley, now a commentator for TNT, showed off his famous, or infamous, golf swing.
