Do you stop for school buses picking up students?
Suffolk County lawmaker joined with school officials Wednesday in urging motorists to not pass school buses that are stopped to pick up and drop off students.
Third District Legislator Kate Browning held a press conference in Yaphank with Longwood Superintendent Allan Gerstenlauer in front of the home of a parent who says many motorists are not stopping for school buses.
Jennifer Garces, who has lived on Yaphank-Middle Island Road since 2000, said she’s concerned about the safety of her three children.
“Since the children started going to school, I have had repeated issues of cars and trucks, which do not heed the blinking red lights of the stopped school bus,” Ms. Garces said.
Ms. Browning said she’s working with the Suffolk County Police Department to increase enforcement on the 45-mph stretch of roadway.
“I will also be requesting the county to install warning signs because there are heavy trucks that use this roadway and these vehicles cannot stop easily because of the curve in the road and the amount of time they have to realize a bus is stopped,” she said. “It’s dangerous and needs to be addressed.”
