Miller Place firefighters remember colleague as 9/11 hero

The Miller Place Fire Department held a 9/11 ceremony Sunday evening at its fire headquarters.

Bells tolled to mark moments of silences for the tragic events that took place on Sept. 11, 2001, including when hijacked planes hit the twin towers in NYC and the Pentagon in D.C., and landed in a field in Shanksville, Pa.

A fire official also rang a bell for all the firefighters who died in the line of duty that day.

First assistant chief Kyle Markott said the fire department is especially remembering Peter Martin, a Miller Place volunteer firefighter and lieutenant with the New York Fire Department’s Rescue 2.

Mr. Martin, who was 43 on Sept. 11, 2001, died trying to save others when the towers collapsed 10 years ago.

“Sept. 11, 2001 is a day we’ll hold in our hearts and minds forever,” Mr. Markott said.
