Find a Sept. 11 anniversary event in your area
Here is a list of local events that will take place on Sunday to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:
Rocky Point
The Rocky Point Fire Department will unveil its 9/11 memorial — featuring a 16-foot-long I-beam recovered from the World Trade Center — on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
The ceremony will take place at the station located at 49 Route 25A in Shoreham.
Sound Beach
The Sound Beach Fire Department will unveil its Garden of Remembrance and 9/11 memorial — featuring a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center — on Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
The fire department will be providing hamburgers and hot dogs after the ceremony, which will take place at the station located at 152 Sound Beach Blvd. in Sound Beach.
Mount Sinai
Mount Sinai Heritage Center will host a “Day of Peace and Remembrance” event on Sept. 11 from noon to 4 p.m.
Boy Scout Troop 384 will conduct a 9/11 memorial service to honor the victims and heroes of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
In addition, the Boy Scouts will assist in erecting the Parade of Flags at the the park’s Avenue of the Americas, which will depict a chronological display of the nation’s growth from colonial times to present.
There will also be music, choir performances, art exhibits and discussions about conflicts and peace.
In-door activities will include making crafts, such as flags, quilts and painting rocks. Out-door activities will include sketching, flying kites and listening to music.
Author Mattie Stepanke will also be reading from her book Heartsongs.
The ceremony will take place at North Shore Heritage Park located at 633 Mount Sinai-Coram Rd. in Mount Sinai.
Riverhead
In honor of the ten-year anniversary of 9/11, the Suffolk County Historical Society will present a September 11th Memorial Exhibit, in collaboration with the Riverhead Free Library. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held at the historical society on tonight from 6 to 8 p.m.
The exhibit explores the history of the Twin Towers with rarely seen photographs of their construction, and also features interpretive artworks in a range of mediums.
