Miller Place woman designs, sells own jewelry

SAMANTHA BRIX PHOTO | Kelly Mazzotta adds jewelry to her display at Hollywood Salon and Day Spa in Miller Place.

On any given day, Kelly Mazzotta can be found in her home office in Miller Place hand-crafting jewelry.

She’s always working on something, whether she’s hammering hoop earrings to add texture, wire-wrapping beads or cutting medal into charms for a bracelet.

The mom of two runs her own jewelry design business called KellyM Jewels.

Ms. Mazzotta, now 30, began making jewelry for her family and friends when she was 18. Two summers ago, she was going to host a party and invite friends to buy jewelry from someone else’s line.

“My husband said, ‘You’re crazy! Hold your own party and sell your own jewelry,’” she said.

So she did.

Once word got out, her business rapidly expanded.

Her products are now sold online and can be found at Hollywood Salon and Day Spa in Miller Place and Zephyr Gallery, a boutique in the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City. She also designs custom jewelry for bridal parties, and her products will soon be sold in Isn’t She Lovely, a boutique opening at Fantasia Bridal in Rocky Point in September.

Ms. Mazzotta also holds private appointments and parties in her home to sell her jewelry.

She has a line for little girls as well, which she sells in Lipsticks and Lollipops in Mount Sinai.

Born and raised in California, Ms. Mazzotta reaps west coast inspiration for many of her pieces. She uses freshwater pearls, aquamarines, topaz, sapphire, mother of pearl, seashells, coral and Swavorski crystal. She hand-cuts all her chains, which are made of sterling silver and 14-karot gold-fill.

“I’m not very cookie cutter,” she said of her design style. “Everyone who comes to me is going to get something very unique.”

Her line for little girls is inspired by her own little girl, who is 7.

“She’s the-bigger-the-better kind of girl, so it’s based around things she likes,” Ms. Mazzotta said.

Pieces include hair clips with giant flowers, headbands with large bows and necklaces with birthstones.

“It’s all very cutesy,” she said.

Jewelry items in her line range in price from $18 to $200. Products in her little girls line range from $8 to $30.

Ms. Mazzotta donates 10 percent of all her revenue to Love 146, a nonprofit organization that works to stop child sex slavery. She found out about the social issue and organization through her church.

She said once she learned about sex trafficking that occurs all over the world, including in the United States, she “couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

“As a mother, it’s a really scary thing to think about,” she said.

And she incorporates the Love 146 name into her line, engraving the name into gold, silver and copper bracelet charms.

While Ms. Mazzotta handles the creative side of the business, the financial duties belong to her husband, a business specialist.

“He’s kind of the perfect person to be married to when you have your own business,” she said with a chuckle.

Ms. Mazzotta is also a part-time real estate agent at Coldwell Banker, but her first love is making jewelry.

“[In jewelry design] I’m constantly building and changing and growing and learning,” she said.
