Tropical Storm Irene’s impact on SunLand schools

SAMANTHA BRIX PHOTO | Longwood High School was transformed into a storm shelter last weekend as then-Hurricane Irene made its way to the area. Today, classes begin at the school.
Tropical Storm Irene knocked the power out of nearly 60,000 homes and businesses in Brookhaven, leaving many in the dark to light candles and tote flashlights.
But five days after the storm, fewer than 14,000 outages remain in the town, and most schools throughout SunLand are back in business with electricity and internet access.
See how Miss Irene affected your school district, and how it’s doing today, with classes getting underway soon:
MILLER PLACE
An emergency notice posted on Miller Place School District’s website says the district’s internet, including Infinite Campus and the district’s e-mail system, is not accessible due to area power outages.
“We are hopeful that once power has been restored, all systems will resume functioning as usual,” the statement reads.
The statement on the website advises residents to call the district office or individual school buildings in case of an emergency.
Power remains out at North Country Road Middle School, where the district’s server is located, so the internet and e-mail systems are inaccessible, superintendent Susan Hodun explained at a school board meeting Wednesday.
Power continues to go on and off at the Andrew Muller Primary School and the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School, but school officials say the district is still set to open for the first day of school as planned Wednesday.
ROCKY POINT
At Rocky Point schools, a section of lighting was out in each building, a school spokesperson said. Phone lines and the e-mail system were also down until Tuesday morning. But as of Thursday, every building regained power and was back to normal.
School is set to begin Wednesday.
LONGWOOD
Each building at Longwood — except for the Charles E. Walter Elementary School — lost power on Monday, but all are now up and running, a Longwood spokesperson said. The district’s website and e-mail were also down until late Monday, and the ConnectEd telephone system wasn’t operating due to the power outages. But each building has since regained power and internet access.
The first day of school is tomorrow.
SHOREHAM-WADING RIVER
Dr. Cohen said at Monday’s Board of Education meeting that none of the district’s buildings sustained any damage from Tropical Storm Irene. As of Wednesday, Briarcliff and Miller Avenue elementary schools were the only buildings that had no electricity.
MOUNT SINAI
Superintendent Anthony Bonasera said at Tuesday’s school board meeting that all schools in the district escaped Tropical Storm Irene unscathed.
“We fared very well,” he said.
