Brooklyn Bagels celebrates 10th anniversary in Rocky Point

Brooklyn Bagels located on Route 25A in Rocky Point held a 10th anniversary celebration Saturday, marking a decade of providing the community with food, fun and charity.
While sibling owners Marie Stewart and Robert Giannino have been making fresh bagels since Sept. 7, 2001, they have also helped others in need by supporting various community events through the years.
“A few days after we opened, 9/11 happened and we immediately set up bins so that people could donate supplies and we also sent food over there,” said Mr. Giannino, 31, of Sound Beach. “We’ve been working to support others in need ever since.”
In addition to participating in various food drives and fundraisers, the owners also provide gifts to a needy family every Christmas.
The owners’ mother, Penny, said not only is she pleased that her children are successful business owners, but she is also proud of their positive involvement in the community.
“They were brought up to share and be considerate,” she said, adding that the family moved from Brooklyn to Long Island in the 1970s.
Brooklyn Bagels can be purchased at over 25 different businesses throughout the area, including at local delis, coffee shops and diners.
The owners said the decision to open the shop, which the previous owner had named “Bruce’s Brooklyn Bagels,” happened casually after their father mentioned he noticed the store was for sale.
At the time, Mr. Giannino attended college and Ms. Stewart, 37, of Rocky Point worked as a cosmetologist.
“Everything just fell into place,” Ms. Stewart said. “The previous owner wasn’t from Brooklyn, but we are. So that’s why we dropped ‘Bruce’ and kept Brooklyn Bagels.”
Since taking over, the ovens have been upgraded to accommodate 25-dozen bagels in order to keep up with the weekend crowd.
“Our biggest competition is with ourselves because we’re always looking to do more,” Ms. Stewart said. “We’re very grateful for the surrounding communities’ support over the years.”
