Remembering 9/11, 7 p.m. at Port Jefferson Free Library, 100 Thompson St. The September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City mark one of the most important events in recent American history. Over 50,000 workers from various walks of life descended on New York City to assist. Some were trained rescue workers, but others were volunteers such as construction workers, electricians, veterinarians, massage therapists, counselors, and clergy, to name a few. An oral history project has been undertaken by the Long Island WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program at SUNY/Stony Brook, Long Island’s only Comprehensive Care Center dedicated to the care of 9/11 responders who suffer from health issues related to their work at ground zero. The inspiration for “Remembering 9/11” comes from stories told by the patients at the clinic, which have been archived to form a primary source document that details this event in American history. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the WTC attacks, the library, in association with the WTC Program – Oral History Project, presents a program featuring recorded accounts of the responders. Glen Klein, a NYC policeman assigned to the emergency service unit on the day of the attacks, will give his first-hand account, including where he was during the attacks, his initial thoughts and expectations and how the disaster changed his life. Register: 473-0022.
