New phone messaging system for Mount Sinai parents

SAMANTHA BRIX PHOTO | Superintendent Anthony Bonasera announced at Tuesday's school board meeting that the district will use a new messaging service this school year.

Mount Sinai School District is launching a new messaging service for the 2011-12 school year, superintendent Anthony Bonasera announced at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting. Whenever a voice-recorded message is delivered to a family’s home, a text message will also be sent to district residents’ cell phones, alerting them of the voicemail. Voicemails can also be directly delivered to smart phones.

School organizations, like the PTA, can create lists through the service and send messages to specific residents.

“That’s an enormous communication tool,” board member Donna Compagnone said. Residents can choose to remove themselves from any lists by calling the district.

The new service will become active this weekend, when Dr. Bonasera will send out a message welcoming parents and students to the new school year. The first day of school for students will be Tuesday.

Dr. Bonasera also announced that all schools in the district escaped Tropical Storm Irene unscathed.

“We fared very well,” he said.
