Editorial: The future of us

The editorial in the very first issue of The North Shore Sun, which is reprinted in Troy Gustavson’s column on the next page, was titled “The history of us.”

That was eight years ago. It was an odd headline for a first issue, since the paper itself didn’t yet have any history.

Fast-forward to this week and the final editorial ever to appear in a Sun newspaper is titled “The future of us.”

While it might seem those headlines should have been reversed, we’d like to use this final bit of editorial space to explain why talking about our future is so appropriate.

The North Shore Sun isn’t going anywhere.

We’ll no longer be sending a print edition to your mailboxes, and our office in Rocky Point will no doubt soon be home to some kind of medical practice.

But we’ll still be out there in the field, bringing you the kind of stories you can’t get anywhere else.

Want to know who won the big basketball game? Visit northshoresun.com.

Couldn’t make the Brookhaven Town Board meeting? Don’t worry, we’ll have a story soon after the roll is called telling you exactly how the board voted on the issues that matter most to you.

The decision to cease the print edition of The North Shore Sun was not a death sentence for your favorite community newspaper. It was simply a new beginning.

Effective immediately, The North Shore Sun is no longer a weekly newspaper — it’s a daily website.

We’ll still be bringing you the hyperlocal school, government, sports and police coverage we’ve become known for, and we’ll be updating it more often.

Sure, the decision to cut our print edition was a cost-saving measure made by our parent company. But it also frees up our staff to do more of the journalism we’ve always strived for.

A lot of preparation goes into producing a weekly newspaper, and one whole day is lost to production each week. Without those time constraints, our reporters and editors can be out in the field and free to write about so much more.

It is our goal now to continue to grow The Sun as your primary source for hard-hitting local news in an online format that delivers the news to you quickly and efficiently.

We will soon begin adding new features to our site — including an interactive calendar and expanded business directory — that will help serve as an online town square for the communities we serve.

That, our loyal readers, is the future of us.
